Monday, June 01, 2020 - Friday, June 05, 2020

Today, we will continue our unit on plants and grade 3's will learn more about the life cycle of a plant. I have uploaded today's work to your child's Science folder in his/her Google Drive and the file is called "Week 9 Day 1 Science Plant Life Cycle." Here is the schedule for this week:

Monday: Science (Students will watch a short video, read a text and draw/label the life cycle of a plant).

Tuesday: Math (We will begin a new Math unit on Probability. I have included 2 video lessons. One lesson reviews probability words used to describe the likelihood of an event. The second video discusses fairness in a game/experiment and how it relates to an equal chance (equally likely). Next, students will complete two worksheets to practice their learning based on the video lessons.

Wednesday: Language (In Spelling, students will review rules with words ending in the letter "y." Grade 3's will follow a link to login to their "boom learning" account and complete a series of questions. Next, students will read another chapter and complete a chapter book summary using the Google Slide shared with the class).

Thursday: Math (We will continue our unit on Probability. I have uploaded a video lesson which focuses on unfairness during experiments and games. Grade 3's will complete an experiment using coins and an unfair spinner, then record their results).

Friday: Religion (Grade 3's will learn about symbols associated with Pentecost. I have uploaded a Google Slide for students to continue their learning of this important time in our Catholic calendar).

We will have our weekly Google Meet on Wednesday at 10:00. Can't wait to see everyone again! If you have any questions regarding this week's work, please let me know. Have a great week!

In Math today, grade 3's will review strategies taught in the classroom to show their thinking when completing addition and subtraction word problems. Students will watch a video, then apply these strategies in their work. The file is called "Week 8 Day 5 Addition/Subtraction Problems." Next week, we will move on to Probability.

Thank you for ensuring that your child's work is fully completed and submitted to me by the end of the week. I truly appreciate your efforts at home.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! It's hard to believe that we will be entering June and the final month of this school year.

I have uploaded today's math work in your child's Google Drive and the file is called "Week 8 Day 3 Movement on a Grid." Students will watch a short video lesson explaining how to move on a path using grid lines, then complete a few questions to practice their learning. We will meet today at 10:00 for our weekly Google Meet. Please ensure that you are following the link from your child's Gmail and that he/she is using their school board account, not your own personal Google account.

I hope that everyone is keeping safe and cool in this very hot, humid weather. See you later!

Tuesday, May 26, 2020

Today, students will continue reading a chapter in their chosen text and complete a summary using the Google Slide that I have shared. Just a reminder that you only have to make one copy of the Google Slide. I have uploaded a document in your child's Language folder in his/her Google Drive. The file is called "Week 8 Day 2 Chapter Book Summary." All students need to read through this document since I have provided a student sample that shows the intended expectations of this task.

As always, we will meet tomorrow for our weekly Google Meet. Can't wait to see everyone again!

Week of May 25, 2020 - May 29, 2020

We will begin this week by continuing our learning on plants. The focus of today's lesson will be on the parts of a plant. I have uploaded the file to the Science folder in your child's Google Drive. The file is called "Week 8 Day 1 Parts of a Plant."

Here is our weekly schedule:

Monday: Science (Parts of a Plant, Students will read a text using the National Geographic for Kids app, watch a short video, read a text and answer questions)

Tuesday: Language (Read a chapter in chosen book and complete a summary using a Google Slide)

Friday: Math (Grade 3's will watch a video lesson as we review addition/subtraction strategies and look for math words that indicate the operation during various word problems)

Once again, thank you for assisting your child at home and for ensuring that I receive all completed work. A strong home/school connection and regular work routines will allow students to make the most out of learning at home. I will continue to focus on curriculum previously not covered and important strategies which students can use in the junior division to ensure further success.

Have a great week!

I have uploaded a Google Slide for today's Religion work. The file is called "Week 7 Day 4 Religion." Today, students will learn more about Mary since we are still in the month of May which is dedicated to her. Our class will read about Mary in the digital Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ textbook, read additional texts (link provided in slide), watch a video and listen to a detailed explanation of the prayer, Hail Mary.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend. Please check our blog on Monday for next week's schedule and any important information that I need to pass on.

Thank you for your continued support!

I have uploaded today's math work in your child's Google Drive. The file is called "Week 7 Day 3 Movement on a Grid." Students will watch a video lesson and complete some practice work in our Nelson digital textbook. I have provided some options for using grid paper for this task. If you are able to print out 1cm grid paper by searching for it online, that would be the best option.

It was great to see our grade 3 students yesterday during our Google Meet. It is very obvious that students are healthy and definitely growing into the junior division both physically and academically.

Have a great learning day!

Wednesday, May 20, 2020

Today, our grade 3 class will continue working on their chapter book summary using the Google Slide that I shared last week. Details of this task were sent out last Friday. Just a reminder, students need to complete a chapter summary (one slide) for each chapter for their chosen book. There will be no additional work uploaded for language today since this assignment is ongoing.

Please make sure that your child has made a copy of the Google Slide so he/she can type his/her response into each slide. Each student needs to share their slide with me so I can keep up-to-date with their chapter summaries.

Tomorrow, we will learn about movement on a grid in mathematics.

Monday, May 18, 2020

Week of May 19, 2020 - May 22, 2020

Friday, May 15, 2020

I have uploaded the instructions for our chapter book task in your child's language folder in his/her Google Drive. The file is called "Week 6 Day 5 Chapter Book Review and Summary." I have included a video lesson of the task since the document is very detailed and it is more for parent reference, than as a student guide. Also, I have shared the Google Slide that accompanies this assignment and it called "Chapter Book Review and Summary." In the video, I mentioned that this Google Slide will be placed in the language folder, but it will be found in the shared folder in the Google Drive.

As mentioned in the video, students will have to make a copy of the Google Slide in order to add text to each slide. Please make sure that your child shares the copy of the Google Slide with me so I can view his/her progress with this task. When sharing the Google Slide with me, please make sure that the can "edit" option is selected so I can add comments to the work.

Next week is a shorter week with the Victoria Day holiday on Monday. I will send next week's work/lessons beginning on Tuesday morning. I hope everyone has a great long weekend and I look forward to reconnecting with our class next week.

Friday, May 1, 2020

Friday, May 01, 2020

Today, students will explore their digital Religion textbook, "Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ." I have uploaded today's work in your child's Religion folder in his/her Google Drive.

Next week has been designated as Catholic Education Week and you would have received a detailed letter from Mrs Di Labio explaining what this means for our Catholic community during this difficult time. Please take some time to read through this message which discusses the underlying theme of "Igniting Hope."

As a Catholic school community, this week is something we always look forward to; this week highlights the positive values, social responsibility and the development of the whole child through faith-based education.

Unfortunately, this week will not be the same as past years. Personally, I will miss taking the St. Gregory choir to sing at St. Paul's high school for Choral Celebration, our annual open house to display our academic excellence, celebrating Mass with Father Tim and of course, all the activities that take place at St. Gregory's during this special week.

Thinking of these memories really emphasizes the relevance and positive message of this year's theme, "Igniting Hope." I encourage everyone to demonstrate and display your message of hope for others or yourself and post it to Twitter #ocsbHope next week.

Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe!
